In a thrilling showdown at Newlands, Sunrisers Eastern Cape showcased their dominance by demolishing Durban's Super Giants to secure back-to-back SA20 titles. The defending champions' exceptional team performance was highlighted by Marco Jansen's outstanding five-wicket haul.
Opting to bat first after winning the toss, Sunrisers posted an imposing total of 204 for 3. The innings featured powerful partnerships, including a dynamic 90-run stand between Jordan Hermann and Tom Abell, as well as an unbroken 98-run partnership between Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs, with Stubbs contributing a top score of 56 not out from 30 balls.
Durban's hopes were dashed early on, as their innings struggled to gain momentum against the Sunrisers' feisty powerplay performance. Dan Worrall's aggressive seam and swing, coupled with Jansen's left-arm brilliance, left Durban reeling at 7 for 3. Despite a brief effort from Wiaan Mulder, who partnered with Matthew Breetzke in a 56-run stand, Jansen continued to be the architect of Sunrisers' success.
The turning point came when Mulder fell to Baartman's delivery, followed by Breetzke losing his off stump to Ottniel Baartman. Heinrich Klaasen, the standout performer of the tournament, lasted just one delivery before being dismissed lbw by Stephen Harris. Sunrisers' triumph was set in motion by a departure from Durban's effective plans, as they handed the opening over to left-arm spinner JJ Smuts. This decision allowed Sunrisers to accumulate nine runs without losing a wicket, setting the tone for a commanding batting display.
Despite a few early scares for Player-of-the-Match Abell, who led a charmed life in the early stages of his innings, his aggressive batting style, including a scoop shot, propelled him to a quick fifty. Durban fought back with Maharaj dismissing both Hermann and Abell in quick succession, but Stubbs and Markram's explosive partnership ensured Sunrisers surpassed the 200-run mark.
In the end, Sunrisers' formidable batting performance and Jansen's exceptional bowling display proved insurmountable for Durban, sealing a comprehensive victory and securing their second consecutive SA20 title.
