Farmers' Protest: Section 144 Imposed at Delhi Borders; No Entry for Tractors from UP | Details
In anticipation of another farmers' agitation scheduled for February 13, the Delhi Police has enforced Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code along the Delhi-UP borders. The order, issued on Sunday, prohibits public gatherings in the jurisdictional area of the north-east district. The move aims to prevent any potential disturbances and maintain law and order.
Key points from the order:
1. Prohibition of Public Gathering: Public gatherings are prohibited at all borders between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, as well as nearby areas in the jurisdictional area of the north-east district.
2. Vehicle Entry Restriction: Entry of various vehicles, including tractors, trolleys, buses, trucks, commercial vehicles, personal vehicles, and even protestors on horses, from Uttar Pradesh into Delhi is strictly prohibited.
3. Arms Prohibition: Individuals or protestors are not allowed to bear arms, including firearms, swords, trishul, spears, lathi, rods, etc. The North East District Police is instructed to detain individuals found contravening this order, with potential punishment under section 188 of the Indian Penal Code, 1860.
Additionally, elaborate security measures are being implemented to seal the Punjab-Haryana borders in Ambala, Jind, and Fatehabad districts in anticipation of the 'Delhi Chalo' march.
Background on Farmers' Demands:
Farmers are demanding a law guaranteeing a Minimum Support Price (MSP), among other conditions they had set when withdrawing their agitation against the now-repealed farm laws in 2021. Their demands include the implementation of the Swaminathan Commission’s recommendations, pensions for farmers and farm laborers, farm debt waiver, withdrawal of police cases, and justice for victims of the Lakhimpur Kheri violence.
In 2020, farmers from Punjab and nearby areas gathered at the Shambhu border, breaking police barriers to march towards Delhi. The year-long protest on Delhi's border points – Singhu, Tikri, and Ghazipur – focused on opposing the now-repealed farm laws.
